Wolverton Manor Garden Fair 2016

The Garden Fair last year was exceptionally busy and very successful. We recently donated £20,000 to age UKIW. This will be used to support the elderly on the Island.

Morrisons Charity of the Year

Age UK are in the running to be Morrisons Charity of the year – we need your help!

I am delighted to share some exciting news - Age UK is through to the final round to be supermarket chain Morrisons chosen national charity for 2017-2020. This opportunity will be worth over £8m to the Age UK network, and Age UK Isle of Wight will receive a share of this.

Morrisons is asking its employees to vote for either Age UK or the charity CLIC Sargent in a staff vote taking place throughout January. The charity with the most votes wins.

So, if you know anyone who works at Morrisons can I encourage you to reach out them and ask them to VOTE FOR AGE UK. You can also:

  • Go into your local Morrisons and ask staff to VOTE AGE UK.
  • Tell all your staff, volunteers and service users to do the same and ask your family and friends to mention Age UK when they are in-store.

There’s a really good reason Morrisons staff should vote for Age UK:

  • 1 in 6 older people on the Isle of Wight live alone
  • More than 1 in 3 older people consider the television as their main form of company
  • 5% of older people spend Christmas Day alone
  • Over a quarter of our Island population is aged 65 and over

Across the Country over one million older people are always lonely and the Age UK network would be able to provide activities and support to ease loneliness and provide companionship for 250,000 lonely older people.

On the Island this equates to supporting over 3,000 people who feel chronically lonely and isolated. You know from the work we do and the increasingly complex cases that we manage, that there are a lot of lonely people, or people on the edge of crisis, on the Island. If Age UK win the Morrisons staff vote funding will be available for us to tackle this problem locally.

With your help we can increase our chances of winning the vote and make a massive positive difference to the lives of local older people. Below is one positive way we were able to help one older Islander who was lonely;
Mr R, aged 80, was widowed after 60 years of happy marriage. Socially isolated with no friends or family to turn to, he struggled to leave the house even to get shopping because of his problems with mobility. Mr R became depressed and began to actively plan his suicide because he couldn’t see his life improving. On a rare trip to the local shop he saw a Good Neighbour Scheme poster and in desperation rang the office for help. After support, Mr R said, “I felt my life was not worth living. I was so sad. Now M comes to see me once a week. I really look forward to her visit; she is so lovely and kind. I feel like I have my life back again.”

We will be sharing posts encouraging people to vote for Age UK across our social media accounts (Links below), please like, share and retweet them to help us reach more people.
